Tour Information

Birdwatching tours begin the second Saturday of October and continue on a weekly basis through February. Enjoy a leisurely two hour walking tour through the grassy refuge grounds that runs from 8am - 10am. Participants can expect to learn about Hawai‘i’s endangered water birds, migratory shorebirds, and waterfowl, as well as the history and conservation efforts of the Refuge. Due to US Fish and Wildlife visitation regulations, group size is limited to a maximum of 20 participants per tour. Sign up ahead of time to secure your spot! We recommend guests wear comfortable casual clothes and closed-toed shoes, please no sandals or slippers. Tours will run in a variety of weather from hot and sunny, to very gusty, to sporadic rain showers, so we also strongly recommend coming prepared for anything with a rain jacket and sun protection (i.e. hat, long sleeves, and/or sunscreen). We strongly recommend guests bring their own, pre-filled, re-usable water bottle, however, food is NOT permitted on the Refuge. ***Tours begin promptly at 8 AM, late comers will not be permitted to join the group after the gate is closed. Please be prepared & plan ahead so you and your group is ready begin the walk at 8 AM*** We encourage guests to bring their own binoculars, but will have a few pairs to loan as needed. Guides will also carry spotting scopes on the tours for the best bird viewing opportunities for guests. Our tours are led by experienced birders and wildlife enthusiasts, volunteers with the 'Friends of O'ahu Refuges' group.
