Volunteering at the Refuges

What activities will you be volunteering for with Maintenance at the Refuge or a Paint Day? Helping to spruce up the bunk houses, facilities and offices of the USFWS and other structures on the refuge. This requires long sleeve shirt, pants and closed toed shoes. Sun hat and sunscreen and water bottle are always recommended.

What activities will you be volunteering for with Habitat Restoration? Helping to restore important habitat for native seabirds, removing invasive species and planting native coastal vegetation. This requires long sleeve shirt, pants and closed toed shoes. Sun hat and sunscreen and water bottle are always recommended.

Bird Tours

Bird Tours for the season are CLOSED.

Look for new tour dates this September for the 2026-27 tour season. We had a fabulous 2025-26 tour season and hope to have even more opportunities this fall.

In the meantime check out our great volunteering opportunities on the refuge!

Tours of the Refuge

The 2025-2026 bird tour season at James Campbell NWR is CLOSED until October 2026. Guided bird tours start in October and run into the spring.  Times are restricted to give important wildlife the quiet they need for raising their offspring.  Tours will be held on selected Saturdays and last between 2-3 hours. Space is limited to 20 participants per tour, each participant will need to book a separate reservation.

Bird tours at James Campbell NWR you can expect to see a variety of migratory birds that have traveled from afar, as well as our local species that reside here year-round. Whether you are a seasoned birder or new to birdwatching, the tour offers a special opportunity to connect with nature and fellow nature enthusiasts.

The tour takes you around wetlands of the Ki'i Unit.  The terrain is uneven grass and it is quite sunny.  We require closed toed footwear for all participants and recommend sun protection and water. We kindly ask our bird enthusiast to be 10 years of age or older. As much as we love our keiki, ensuring a calm experience helps protect the wildlife. For information on family events that cater to all ages, please reach out to the refuge, they will be happy to assist you.
